My Favorite Books on Health & Nutrition
Books open up a whole new world to us. One filled with inspiration, motivation, information, and allows us to access the minds of people we might otherwise not have access to. In my health journey, and now as a health professional, much of my learning has come from books.
There are many books that have completely opened my eyes in terms of nutrition and have caused me to rethink what I previously believed. There are books that have inspired me to fully live in my health journey. There are books that have explained difficult concepts to me in approachable ways. There are so many books to learn from!
In this post I share my favorite books on health and nutrition.
The Proof Is In The Plants by Simon Hill
I first learned about Simon Hill from the Rich Roll Podcast and immediately purchased a copy of his book. Hill discusses the science and research behind a plant based diet. What I most enjoyed about this book is that he looked at the data in supporting his stance on a plant based diet. His research clearly shows the benefits to a WFPB diet.
“To the best of our knowledge, eating a plant-based diet is a safe and sensible means of protection against unforeseen and potentially avoidable health crisis that could otherwise be in our genetic future…will statistically reduce your chance of developing or dying from a chronic lifestyle disease.”
The China Study by T. Colin Campbell
In his best selling book, Campbell discusses the connection of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer with nutrition. He also examines the way in which government and other industries uses confusion to trick the population into eating a particular way. This book is must read!
“Good health is about being able to fully enjoy the time we do have. It is about being as functional as possible throughout our entire lives and avoiding crippling, painful and lengthy battles with disease. There are many better ways to die, and to live.”
The Longevity Book by Cameron Diaz
The thing that made this book so meaningful and inspiring to me is the way that Diaz talks about the aging process, primarily in women. Aging is something we fear but it is a beautiful process to be embraced and not scared of. This book helped me to feel confident in my body and helped me to love my body and all the capabilities it has.
“We can’t predict the future, but we can invite it. We can prepare for it. And we can give ourselves a chance to live longer, stronger.”
Finding Ultra by Rich Roll
As an endurance athlete this book was my first realization that I could not only be vegan and run far but that I could THRIVE that way. Roll takes the reader through his incredible life transformation that carries with in many messages. We are not stuck in the life we start with, you can change paths at absolutely any time. The choices we make about our health impact our physical abilities and impacts the planet. Roll also shares detailed nutrition advice and tips for endurance athletes.
“Pursue what’s in your heart, and the universe will conspire to support you.”
Michael Pollan Books
While not one book in particular I recommend everything that Michael Pollan has written. His books are incredible! He dives into the world of plants, psychedelics, the way we currently eat, and so much more. “Food Rules” would be a good place to start to dive into Pollan’s wonderful writing.
“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. That, more or less, is the short answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated and confusing question of what we humans should eat in order to be maximally healthy.”
